How it started
You’ve heard a song a dozen times this month and you still don’t know its name. That’s the whole reason WhatSongIsThis exists — not to reinvent how you listen to music, just to close that one small, persistent gap between hearing something and being able to say what it was.
Most days that’s fine. You half-hum it, half-forget it, and move on. This is for the days it isn’t fine, when you want the name now, not eventually.
How it works, briefly
Upload a file, record a few seconds live, or paste a link. Your clip becomes an acoustic fingerprint — a pattern based on how the frequencies move over time. That fingerprint gets checked against a catalog of commercially released tracks. A match gets you a title, an artist, and somewhere to listen. No match, and nothing about your clip sticks around either way.
What we chose not to build
No account. No app to download. No history of what you’ve searched. It would have been easy to add a login and a saved-songs list — plenty of tools like this do. It was left out on purpose. The job is answering one question quickly, not building a profile of what you listen to.
Where this is headed
A few things are already planned: humming a tune instead of recording it, showing the key and tempo alongside the title, and pasting a TikTok or YouTube link straight in. Nothing here is final until it ships, but that’s the direction.
